Mimi wo Sumaseba (literally If You Listen CLosely), also known as
Whisper of the Heart, is an animated movie produced by Studio Ghibli (
Spirited Away, Howl's Moving castle), adapted from the shoujo manga of the same title. The movie tells the story of Shizuku's journey of self-discovery as she slowly finds her goal in life with the help and support of the people around her...and some love. ^_~
Tsukushimi Shizuku is an average fourteen-year-old girl, spirited, lazy, somewhat tomboyish, with a penchant for words and perhaps too much of a voracious appetite for books. Although in her last year of junior-high, like many girls her age she has no aim in life and has her head up in the clouds
Amasawa Seiji is Teh Asshole (or
yanayatsu, as Shizuku first calls him before she knows his name). XD Omg don't we all love bad boys? But he's not bad at all. He's just shy. Isn't that even more love? Yeah yeah now we all know the webmistress has a huge thing for Seiji. But how can you not love a guy who can ride bikes, play violins,
make violins and is so endearingly romantic? ♥ Anyway, Seiji is fourteen, like Shizuku, and goes to the same school as her. The only difference is that he has a clear idea of his goal in life, and it is he who spurs Shizuku to develop a clearer focus of her future.
Seiji/Shizuku, like many Studio Ghibli couplings, is a very strong pairing. They have excellent dynamics, and complement each other well. Like how Seiji's violin-playing and Shizuku's singing culminated in a beautiful rendition of
Kantorii Roodo, Seiji's dedicated work towards his ambition spurs Shizuku to develop her own goal, while Shizuku's support of Seiji encourages him to work hard. They have excellent chemistry too, their antagonistic beginning giving way quickly to easy talk as they share their thoughts without restraint. But what else should we expect? After all they did like (sort of) each other before they knew the other personally.
They is true love!
